At the core of the complex are two theatres and a drama studio.
Why was the Lowry built?
Lowry and various performance and exhibition spaces, is located by the waterside in the redeveloped area of Salford Quays in Greater Manchester. The architect’s ambition was to create a new focal point within the community to encourage people to experience the visual and performing arts.

Can you swim in Salford Quays?
Be safe. Unsupervised swimming in the Quays and jumping from bridges is prohibited and not allowed for your safety. No matter how hot the weather, open water in Salford Quays is cold. The risk of drowning through cold water shock is real.

What happened to Lowry’s father?
Lowry’s father died of pneumonia in 1932, leaving considerable debts. His mother then took to her bed, where she stayed for seven years, totally dependent both physically and emotionally on her son. His paintings were by then slowly attracting attention and, aged 52, he had a breakthrough.
